World War II Soviet Tass Posters at Chicago Art Institute - NYTimes.com:

"Jill Bugajski, an art historian and one of the curators of a show that opens on Sunday at the Art Institute of Chicago, “Windows on the War: Soviet TASS Posters at Home and Abroad, 1941-1945.” The exhibition of about 150 pieces, with a catalog from Yale University Press, is the first major scholarly study of the topic in English. A trove of Tass posters was discovered at the Art Institute in 1997, rolled up in a closet. They had scarcely been looked at since they arrived from the Soviet Union in the 1940s."

"More than 100 members of the Carousel Organ Association of America will haul their instruments from 14 states and Canada. Calliopes, grind organs, Wurlitzer and Stinson band organs -- some of which are the size of a room -- fill[ed] the air with carnival music from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. [July 30 and 31st, 2011.]"

Grind organs were once called monkey organs because the grinders had live monkeys who attracted an audience and then worked the crowd by carrying a cup to collect coins, according to Ted Guillaum, association president. They were a staple of street performers from about 1880 to 1920, here and in Europe.

"I wish I had a nickel for everyone who asked me where my monkey was," said Guillaum, who purchased his German-crafted Raffin crank organ in 2003. Guillaum expects the Olcott rally to draw a record number of instruments.

"I had worked on the Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen steamboats and loved the sound of the calliope," said Guillaum, 62, and an archival assistant with the Tennessee Library and Archive in Nashville. "I jumped in not knowing anything."

The Carousel Organ Association sponsors a handful of rallies each year in such cities as Urbandale, Iowa; Weston, Mont., and Chattanooga, Tenn. A favorite rally point is Knoebels Amusement Park in Elysburg, Pa.

The people 'couldn't believe what we collect and many of the exhibits brought back memories of by-gone eras,' Gwen said.

'People couldn't be happier with what they saw and many left having made several purchases, and very favourable comments.'

Valuations were extremely popular with a queue both days.

Barry Collier from Isadora Antiques was kept busy with people being prepared to sit and wait for his valued opinion on many items brought in for him to see."

Local collector Ron Norwood will host the Argus Collectors Group

"Argus basically made about 100 cameras but these had variations, which sent the numbers higher. Norwood has about 200 in his main collection.

He met Doug Wilcox, who displayed his collection of 2,000 to 3,000 cameras in his Dyno Tees store in Martinsville, Va. The two started the Virginia-Carolina Classic Camera Collectors, which meets monthly.

“One year, we decided to invite all the Argus camera collectors to come to Martinsville for a day,” Norwood said. An invitation for collectors from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Maryland was issued on the Argus Collectors Group Internet network.

“Much to our surprise, the night before, a carload of guys came walking in from Massachusetts,” Norwood said. “Another car comes in from Vermont and another from New York.

“We found out people were interested. Argus collectors from all over got interested because nobody else was doing it, and it has continued.”"

"... what has happened to decoys [is] a fascinating study of Americana on many levels. Freimuth, who thinks he has been to every show since 1977, understands the many strands threaded into collecting decoys.

‘‘Once a guy went to a decoy show, the imprint was stamped on [his] forehead: You can’t get enough,’’ he said. ‘‘You meet a lot of people like yourself.’’

His collection focuses on birds from Evans Decoy Factory, a Wisconsin business from the early 20th century."

There are two main threads in collecting decoys: Those who collect for love or memories and those who collect as an investment.

‘‘It isn’t expensive,’’ Freimuth said. ‘‘The collectors have to guard their finances. Buy what you can afford. Buy what you like.’’

Decoy Collectors National Convention in Saint Charles, Illinois from April 25th - 30th

New Midwest Decoy Collectors Association to host 46th Annual National Convention:

"The Midwest Decoy Collectors Association (MDCA - http://www.midwestdecoy.org) annual convention will be held at the Pheasant Run Resort in Saint Charles, Illinois from April 25th - 30th, 2011. Members and exhibitors will be in attendance from across the U.S. as well as Canada. There will be a global attendance at this event with collector's traveling from as far away as Europe and Japan."

The growing popularity of decoy collecting in recent years was typified at the MDCA event in 2010 when several rare examples sold at auction for record prices.

For 46 years, the MDCA's annual convention has continued to host a wonderful selection of special events, educational seminars and social activities for decoy collectors.

From Monday April 25th through Saturday April 30th the ever popular room trading and displays will be open to attendees. There will also be over 400 tables with over 20,000 items on display at the Pheasant Run Resort Megacenter.

The Guyette and Schmidt auction will take place Thursday at 11am and Friday at 10am.

Comics: Seduction of the Innocent: Paul E. Curtis w/ cartoon autographs in censorship book #MOCCAfestnyc

Micro-comics artist Paul Edgar Curtis was kind enough to show us autographs from cartoon artists that he has collected since the 1970s -- inside of a book about the damaging effects of comic books. Easily the coolest thing that we saw at the 2011 MOCCAfest at the Lexington Avenue Armory last weekend.

UPDATE (April 23): Paul emailed us to say that he has seen other copies of this book used for autographs. So he's going to go through his book and share images and stories about all the signatures which will, by the way, establish a provenance for the first and authentic comic book autograph book.

Paul organized/participated in the Micro-comics segment of the market when the classic underground cartoons were passing the pinnacle of their popularity. The niche for MICRO-comics appears to be making a strong revival, with dozens of 8-1/2" x 11" folded or stapled small-format comic books and Zines to be found at MOCCAfest 2011.

"Sue Ellen Linn, of Lehigh, had a table full of rocks and minerals she was selling Saturday at the annual River Valley Rockhounds Gem, Mineral and Fossil show on the Webster County Fairgrounds.

Linn has been collecting since she was 6.

'I just started picking them up,' she said.

Linn is now 11, making her the youngest vendor at the show."

"New York quilt collector Joanna Rose received her first quilt, a red and white blanket with a schoolhouse design, upon the birth of her first child in 1957. She hasn't stopped collecting since and has amassed more than 1,300 quilts. When Ms. Rose, who belongs to a prominent New York real-estate family, recently turned 80, she decided to put her entire collection of red and white quilts—some 651—on public display.

Hosted by the American Folk Art Museum, 'Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts' at the Park Avenue Armory, beginning next Friday and ending March 30, will be the largest textile exhibition ever presented in New York City."
