Collecting vintage furniture in West Australia

Vintage wares to sigh for - The West Australian:
"Collecting is a favourite pastime for Mr Chipper, but it was only eight years ago, after setting eyes on a striking Clement Meadmore chair, that he became a serious furniture collector.

'I had collected things before that but as far as furniture goes that was one of the pieces that kind of started off more serious collecting,' he said.

Over the years, he has accumulated a diverse mix of global and local furniture pieces that reflect designs from the modernist, abstract and vintage eras."

This expansive log structure, whose centennial is this year, is an enduring showcase for the astute designer, savvy industrialist and visionary thinker. Stickley’s simplified furniture and designs and dissemination of environmental and lifestyle ideas in his The Craftsman magazine influenced American tastes for furnishings and architecture at the turn of the Twentieth Century and ever after."

"The more than 200 items — furniture, clothing, etc. — in the exhibition illustrate three aspects of Shaker design: clean, crisp lines; an integrated design philosophy; and, yes, the occasional hit of color, some of it quite vibrant.

Gather Up the Fragments originated at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Mass; the objects are drawn from a collection started by Faith and Edward Andrews in the 1920s. Though the Andrews were not the first outsiders to appreciate the simple beauty of Shaker furniture and other work, they were among the first to begin collecting and cataloging the objects."

Philippe Garner interview | 20th Century Decorative Art and Design | Christie's #furniture #design #collecting

The Interview with Philippe Garner | 20th Century Decorative Art and Design | Interview | Christie's
When Philippe Garner started collecting, in his early 20s, he was drawn to the styles of the early 20th century, but without yet having determined the shape of the collection. He very rapidly came to the realisation that it somehow wasn’t the decorative aspects of the arts of this period that appealed to him, but an underlining sense of purpose and pursuit of clarity on the part of the designers that expressed itself in a new purity of form. There is a rich intellectual as well as aesthetic narrative within the collection.
