Atlas of True place Names in Britain, Europe and the United States

Atlas of True Names uses etymology to give us an unusual insight into familiar geographical names.

There are plenty of competing theories, such as Bishop Diego de Landa's story that it's a Hispanicized version of Ci uthan, meaning "they say it." Or perhaps it's from Nahuatl Yokatlan "place of riches" (disputed here), or from a word meaning "massacre" (from yuka "to kill" and yeta "many" — so says Adrian Room's Place Names of the World). Even Hormes and Peust give another possibility: Nahuatl yuhcatlan "abandoned place".

The Atlas of True Names replaces the traditional names of the world's cities, countries, rivers and mountains with new ones to reflect their origins and literal meaning.

The Great Land of the Tattooed (Great Britain), now features such cities as Hillfort (London), Bear Guard Home (Birmingham), Choked Pool (Liverpool) and Slopecastle (Edinburgh).

Chief Halftown and Sally Starr

Reminiscing about these two television personalities that were part of the last dying embers of nostalgia for Cowboys and Indians in the 1970s. Gene London also had his own after school TV show with cartoons and ghost stories.

These performers were contemporaries of other local TV personalities on Philadelphia, like Wee Willie Webber, Dr. Shock (Joe Zawislak) and Elvira. Don't forget the early Goth soap opera called "Dark Shadows" (1966-1971) with Barnabas Collins.

I saw Chief Halftown about 18 years ago doing a TeePee gig at Dutch Wonderland when I took my children there. I gushed like a little girl and tried to convince my kids how cool he was / is.

Sally is still with us, living I think in Jersey. spoke with her in '88 and she was working in nsyndication in small markets.

"I hope you feel as good as you look, cuz you sure look good to your gal Sal...!" I remember it well!

Our gal sal. remember her show with cartoons? and chief haftown came to cynwyd school one day and told us what it was like to be an indian. did you know he was a star athlete? read that somewhere recentlly.

We use to take the kids to Dutch Wonderland and he would be sitting in a teepee waiting and hoping that someone would come over and say hello...so sad to see and this was 2003-2005 I'm guessing

It's too early to say what Marilyn-branded clothing will look like, except that it will be "elegant, elegant, elegant -- and size doesn't matter," Salter said.

Back then, controversy sparked over whether it was Monroe who appeared masturbating and having sex with an unknown man. At the conference, Barsa mentioned documents from the FBI investigating the origin of the film, and a set of jewelry worn by Monroe in the film that is the same as what she wore on other films and photos she did around that time.

Barsa explained how an American officer took these films to France, where they remained stored and forgotten for decades in an antique shop in Paris, until two Spanish collectors unknowingly bought them together with other films, and later discovered the great resemblance of the film’s star with Norma Jean Baker.

Real life "Valkyrie" - Rare WWII Wound Badges from assassination of the "evil one"

XXX - HUMAN EVENTS:

"In the collecting world one of the most elusive of all collectables is a German wound badge dated '20 July 1944.' As a rule, German wound badges were not dated, however, a run of about a hundred badges were made with this and a facsimile of Hitler's signature on the obverse. This run was made for him to award to the soldiers wounded in this closest to successful attempt on his life. I guess the intent was to reward those who were loyal and willing to continue to stand, quite literally, close to Hitler. I like to think of it as a commemorative to the 'so close' attempt on his life.

This nearly successful assassination of the evil one was refreshed to the general population in the recent film 'Valkyrie' starring Tom Cruise. Although the attempt failed, it was such a large scale endeavor it could not be covered up. This should have been a wakeup call for all of German to rise up and stop the madness, but it was not. Furthermore the paranoid witch hunt that followed probably eliminated any other organized plans in their infancy."

"He struggles to explain his drive to collect so many objects — and experiences. His passion for more than a decade has been mission work abroad.

“I think it’s looking for something that I don’t know what I’m looking for,” he says, “but I know when I’ve found it.”

A number of treasures

He found a record player Elvis Presley gave to a friend. He collected Margaret Mitchell’s letters, Lou Gehrig’s wedding band, Joe Frazier’s corner robe, Joe Louis’ boxing permit and gloves, Jim Thorpe’s worn leather scrimmage shoe, Joe Namath’s jersey and Larry Bird’s too."

How can it be, when he owns signatures of the Beatles, Buffalo Bill, Harry Houdini, Greta Garbo, Knute Rockne, Babe Ruth, George Custer and — this seems so unlikely — but there it is on the wall in a guest bedroom — Sitting Bull? The leader of the Lakota reportedly was illiterate but could write his own name.

Espy also has letters from Albert Einstein, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., John Belushi, Amelia Earhart, George Patton and, because he is a Southern boy from Alabama, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee.

“I think a lot of my ambition came from watching my parents work so hard to give us relatively little,” he explains. “Most things that are worthwhile are gotten through sweat and toil.”

Finally, during an exhaustive tour of his home, Espy and a visitor come across something different: a pea green wooden wagon the size of a loaf of bread. The wood is roughhewn, cobbled together with nails. There is an old note inside: “Made for Basil by Pa Pugh in 1938.” Espy remembers back to when he was 3, sitting on a swing while his grandfather built the wagon for him. He picks it up. This, he decides, is his most cherished possession.

"Nick Inglis: I have been collecting original screen worn costumes and props for the past fifteen years and it has turned into quite a passion. For me, it began with one or two costume pieces and over the years has turned into the collection it is today. I came across an old auction catalogue selling film costumes one day and literally stated, “I didn’t know that you could own things that appeared in films.” I have been hooked ever since."

A suit of Elizabeth Taylor’s from the 1951 film “Father’s Little Dividend”, sequel to “Father of the Bride” (1950).

Jack Hawkins in the 1959 version of “Ben-Hur”, and a helmet from the film.
