"At the top of the list, of course, are blogs about antiques and collecting, including one written by New York collector and author Stanley Williams, also known as 'The Elegant Thrifter.' Williams, author of 'The Find,' which chronicles his adventures in New York thrift-shop treasure hunting, is clearly a devotee of the hunt and shares tips and to-dos with us in his book and on his educational and entertaining blog, www.theelegantthrifter.com."

Postcard: Aquamaids @ Florida's Cypress Gardens (via Papergreat)

Florida's famed Cypress Gardens and the aquamaids: " [[excerpt of full article]]

From Papergreat: (This entry is a reworking of a pair of posts that originally appeared on Relics in January 2010.)

Pictured above is the front cover of a pocket-sized, fold-out brochure for Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, Florida. It is from the 1950s or 1960s. Inside, the brochure touts:
'The world famous aquamaids and champions star in four water ski shows daily. 'America's Tropical Wonderland,' a combination of beautiful girls in old fashions amid settings of tropical plants and flowers. Truly a photographer's paradise featured in movies, television, newsreels and magazine covers.'
The admission rates printed on the brochure were $1.50 or $2, depending on the time of year. Children ages 12 to 16 got in for a mere 35 cents, while children under age 12 got in for free.

The aquamaids were the big attraction.

There's more waterskiing wonders and weird motel postcards at dotpattern: the digital museum of collecting. I'm not if sure this is the aquamaids pictured below, but they are from the south.

The Yellow Book (1894), by Aubrey Beardsley

11 x 14-3/4 in (27.9 x 37.5 cm)
Price: $1,600

Text from International Poster Center @PostersPlease
The Yellow Book, a literary magazine founded by Beardsley and the American writer, Henry Harland, in London on January 1, 1894, left behind a legacy of pleasantly elegant and subtly sensual graphic design. The often used wandering maiden at left served as something as a promotional anchor for the publication. This particular version of the design--intended to attract the London literary public to a Vigo Street book store--dispenses with a typically-seen secondary image altogether, which often changed to reflect specific issues. During his short life, Beardsley’s principal works were black-and-white illustrations, primarily for books and magazines. Additionally, he created several posters of great artistic merit.

The very first issue of this popular periodical. Printed in January of 1899, this is volume 1, number 1, published by P.G. Huardel & Co.

With a surprisingly large number of Art Nouveau reproductions, this periodical fabulously shows off the passion for posters at the turn of the century. The table of contents notes such topics as 'Our Object,' 'On Poster Collecting,' 'New Posters (A Critique), 'New Posters (A List),' 'Entre Nous,' 'Answers to Correspondents,' and 'Poster Bourse (Mucha).' It is a rare chance to see first hand how posters were viewed at the time of their creation!"
